MASTECTOMY
What
to Expect Following Surgery:
- You
should be ready to go home the day after your surgery.
- You
will go home with two or more drains coming out from under your
bandage.
- These
may cause discomfort in your armpit and near your breastbone.
This is normal.
- The
nurses at the hospital will teach you and your family how to
empty these drains and write down the amount of drainage. Please
bring the record of drainage to our office on your first visit
after surgery.
- You
will NOT be able to exercise or shower while the drains are
in. You may take a sponge bath.
- Some
clots may form in the drains. These will not hurt you. If the
drains go dry (no drainage) and your incisions start to swell,
please call our office 919.876.2010.
- Your
doctor may have you wear an arm sling on the side of your surgery
until your drains are removed.
- Your
drains are usually taken out in our office in 4-6 days or when
the drainage has decreased significantly. Sometimes the doctor
will keep the drains in longer if there is still a remarkable
amount of drainage.
